Roll for Initiative!
The Five Foot Square has, in some ways, been years in the making. It’s a combination of a number of projects I’ve been slowly putting together over the years and some that I’ve always wanted to do but never had the time. Of course, things changed this year for myself just like for a number of people and – for the first time – I had the time and ability to finally focus on getting this mega-project underway.
I might be getting a little ahead of myself – hi! Welcome to The Five Foot Square. My name is Rian (you can find me at @RedWizardRian on Twitter) and, in perhaps one of the largest understatements I’ve ever made, I love tabletop gaming. Whether it’s board games, card games, miniature games, roleplaying games, or perhaps even weirder fare – I absolutely adore these games. From this love has come The Five Foot Square.
What is it, you ask? In my mind I see The Five Foot Square as a combination blog, news site, and resource for tabletop games, most specifically (as the name itself might suggest) roleplaying games with the occasional smattering of crossover into board, card, and miniature games. I hope to have a little bit of something for everyone but my personal love of these games comes from running them and building worlds for others to explore – so you can likely expect a heavy lean towards new mechanics and articles for gamemasters of all stripes.
Why should you read what I’m writing? Well, I’m hoping you just enjoy the content I put out there almost as much as I enjoy coming up with it and writing it. If you’re looking for a little more “pedigree” though… well, I’ve been playing all sorts of tabletop games for between twenty-five and thirty years now and I’ve been running roleplaying games for almost twenty. I’ve run and played everything from stock D&D (Second Edition all the way up to Fifth Edition) and Pathfinder through some lesser known games such as Nobilis, Don’t Rest Your Head, and Mekton.
I’m not even pretending that I know everything about these games, though, and I’d love to hear from others about their opinions and thoughts on the things I’m going to be covering in the various posts throughout the site. Feedback in every form is appreciated and you can leave comments on the post in question, contact me through the form I have set up on the site, or reach out to me via the social network on your choice.
In the end, I hope that – in six months to a year’s time – The Five Foot Square is a burgeoning resource that’s able to provide information to help out with getting going with pretty much any game and to provide some more in-depth dives into particular games. I’m hoping this is going to be quite a journey and I especially hope to see you come along on it with me.
Until next time!
