State of the Square: September 2021
Even though this isn’t the first post of the month, let me welcome you (once again) to September! And welcome back to the State of the Square! The last time I did one of these was way back in April; I stand by my decision to ease off on doing them every month as I felt they forced me to put out content for the site I wasn’t happy with just to have something to post about each month.
In reality, it was a slow summer for us, site-wise. A few sessions each of Let the World Burn Away and Curse of the Shattered Kings ran – and continue to run, albeit with occasional interruptions as life gets in the way of myself and my players. No excuses – I wish I could have run more but it just didn’t happen. We did have an amazing session of Action Movie World one weekend that will eventually make its way to YouTube (but requires more editing than I’m willing to do at the moment to be watchable after the fact) and I’m hoping to find time to do more one-shots in the future.
As for the site itself… well, there’s a few new things. You may have noticed we have a new logo now. The old one was made extremely quickly while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the project originally and was difficult to read, especially at a distance (it didn’t help that I only had a fairly low-res version to work with). The new logo is clearer and reads more easily – which is absolutely great. It is, hopefully, the first step towards a fresh start around here.
Another fresh start is a minor side project of mine which is tied to the site – starting a few days ago, I launched a channel on YouTube called Five Foot Trading. For those who aren’t aware, I’m something of a collector of various items – though I have, and always have had, a strong affinity towards cards (both from games and otherwise). This channel – and the entire project that may evolve out of it – is devoted to just that. With a mixture of physical and digital collectibles, I plan to cover everything and give a fairly consistent stream of content.
Fear not, that doesn’t mean this site is going to the way side – I just need to have a bit of a breather to decide what’s going on here. While that is going on, we’re hosting this month’s RPG Blog Carnival with a look at education in tabletop games. Our own entry for the month will be coming soon but I’m looking forward to seeing what other’s come up with.
That’s it for this month’s State of the Square. I expect to do another around the end of the year but wouldn’t expect more than that. There’s more to come, I promise – we’ll see you there.
